FAQs

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Only 3 out of every 10 students who begin primary school will complete the required 6 grades of school. One half of all preschool age children will never attend school because of a lack of resources.

LifeLink International, in partnership with sponsors like you, seeks to end this cycle of poverty and iliteracy and provide the children of Nicaragua with the opportunity to receive a quality Christian education.

  • How much does it cost to sponsor a child?

    $38 a month.

  • How long should I sponsor my child?

We hope your sponsorship is a long-term commitment; however, the length of each sponsorship depends on your desires. Sponsorship may end for any of the following reasons:
    1. The family has moved to a different community. Occasionally, circumstances arise that mean a child must leave the sponsorship program.
    2. If circumstances change and your child is no longer available for sponsorship, LifeLink will notify you and send you a precious new child in need to begin sponsoring.

  • Can I send gifts to my sponsored child?

Yes. LifeLink International encourages sponsors to give additional monetary gifts to their sponsored children for special occasions, to address specific needs or simply as an act of love. These gifts are another effective way for you to reinforce your care and commitment to your child.

Our field staff will purchase gifts on behalf of our sponsors and make certain that these funds are used appropriately. As a guideline, we ask that sponsors keep these contributions between $10 and $25 for each child. You may also send a gift to your sponsored child’s family. With your monetary gift of $25 to $100, the LifeLink staff will buy items your child’s family needs, such as construction material and food supplies. We will work closely with the family to determine the greatest need and then purchase items accordingly.

You are welcome to bring gifts to your child if you visit Nicaragua on a short-term trip, but please keep your gifts simple. At this time, we cannot bring gifts and other items from the States into the country for you and shipping is very expensive, unreliable and not recommended.

  • Is there anything I cannot send to my sponsored child?

As a sponsor, you have many opportunities to communicate with the child you sponsor and we encourage you to do so. When you communicate with him or her, however, we ask you to provide comments and materials consistent with the Christian values and philosophies we share with our partnering churches. We will not forward photographs and other mateirals depicting activities that:

    • Might be considered inappropriate in another culture.
    • Promote lifestyle choices that we view as unhealthy and inconsistent with biblically based lifestyles or otherwise inappropriate for sponsored children.
    • Might threaten the safety of the sponsored children in any way.

For example, we will not forward materials that depict or describe the use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, unlawful drugs and materials or activities that we regard as dangerous or unsafe. We will not forward materials or communications that advocate another religious worldview. In addition, we will not forward materials depicting persons dressed in immodest clothing or engaging in activities inconsistent with our ministry values and beliefs.

  • How can I communicate with the child I sponsor?

When you become a sponsor, you’ll receive a special brochure about your child, including a section with practical suggestions about writing the child you’re helping.

We encourage you to send your sponsored child a personal or family photograph and a short letter of introduction. We will translate your letter and deliver it to your sponsored child. Sponsored children keep their sponsors’ photos and letters in their homes as treasured possessions.

You can write and even email to your sponsored child as often as you like. When you write, your sponsored child will benefit from knowing that someone in addition to his or her family really cares. Your words of encouragement will make a big difference to your child.

The more you write the child you sponsor, the more he or she will reap the benefits of your relationship.

  • What other opportunities will I have to learn about the child I’m helping?

In addition to letters from your sponsored child, LifeLink will send you periodic updates about your child’s progress. You may even decide to visit the child you sponsor on a LifeLink Sponsor Trip. It’s an unforgettable experience. You can find out more about sponsor tours by calling or emailing us: info@lifelinkint.org

  • Will my child write to me?

Yes, you will receive at least four updates about your child per year, which may include a letter or craft project from them depending on their age and skill level. Letter writing is developmental for children as it improves their basic literacy, self-awareness and ability to put thoughts and feelings into words.

  • How important is prayer in LifeLink sponsorship?

Prayer is a critical link between LifeLink sponsors and the children they help. Your sponsored child is in need and vulnerable.

Your prayers for the health, safety, education and spiritual development of your child are critical. Sponsored children are greatly encouraged when they hear that their sponsors are praying for them.

Remember that the child you sponsor will likely pray for you, too. Often, a sponsored child’s family and church join in prayer with the child on behalf of a sponsor. As you share your own family and personal concerns with the child you support, you’ll probably discover that he or she is consistently praying for you.

  • Is my sponsorship gift tax deductible?

Gifts to LifeLink International, a 501(c)(3) organization, qualify as charitable contributions and are tax-deductible.

You can print a current tax receipt by signing into your “Donate Online” account at the LifeLink website.
